Almost all the problems of catastrophic with large data storage systems are derived from software issues, not dead disks. This is why Mozy lost data - I can guarantee it almost. Mozy automatically reset data if you lose there on the side. If it is damaged on there side and they know and do not adjust it.

Just to keep this ticking over. MozyPro. Failed backups due to "glitches". Failed restores using 'web restore'. Email alerts notified backup success when zero files had been transferred. File sizes less than 1Gb.

BE Careful, Mozy will NEVER give notice when they are taking a payment out of your account.
You will be notified AFTER the fact.
Not very customer friendly.
You will NEVER be able to talk to a real person who speaks English well.

I have no experience actually using Mozy since I signed up 3 weeks ago and i paid the fee but i have never been able to set it up, I have e-mailed help multiple times and they have not responded back!! Is there a direct line to talk to someone at Mozy?

Mozy software is shit and there is no way to cancel short of sending them a zillion emails, then contacting your credit card company to reverse charges and getting into a disputed situation. There is NO way to cancel on the website. Don't sign up. You'll totally regret it in the case of a disaster.

I foresee a class action suit against Mozy. I don't understand the esoterics like you do but I can tell crap when I see it. Not only did the product not work ( I ran a manuel backup at midnight and 3 PM the next day, it was 1% completed. ) When I tried to contact any tech support, there were so many grammatical and spelling errors, I was immediately put off. I couldn't make any changes to the files chosen for back up, I could make no changes whatsoever. I just finished deleting the program and complaining bitterly, lesson learned.

My experience is now like yours. I too used to love Mozy but for more than 2 weeks I've been unable to get reliable backups. They keep apologizing and promising a fix but it is clear that they are unable to correct the problem. I have asked them what they will do for those of us that they are failing and thus far have not gotten a reply. I read elsewhere that they refuse to give refunds. I strongly recommend that no one sign up for Mozy. When it worked it was great but when it failed it was utterly unable to fix the problem or to accept responsibility and compensate the customer. David: You cannot have a restore unless you have backup and your software will not back up 3/4ths of my data. WHY? Because it lies on external disk and your software just doesn't work for external drives. And I was told because you take USB drive to another computer and copy everything on it to the USB drive and therefore backup 2 computers. Yes this is possible but so as using something like FBackup (free local network backup utility that even backs up opened files using VSS.) to backup everything from one computer to another whose local drive has a TB and then install Carbonite on it and backup one computer without using external disks at all. However in my case I have a HP Laptop with a 200 GB hard with about 300 GB of Music and about 300 GB of pictures -- somehow with your software I have to put 600 GB and 200 GB at least with Mozy, I don't have to worry about that and my limited budget can afford $5 a month where as other services (not yours) want to charge 50 cents a GB a month do to a disability my income is less then $1000 per month. My pictures that I have taken over the past 30 years are worth a lot to me but the budget comes first. So what if takes a little time to restore, I have nothing but time.

According to the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), the definition of RAID 6 is: "Any form of RAID that can continue to execute read and write requests to all of a RAID array's virtual disks in the presence of any two concurrent disk failures. Several methods, including dual check data computations (parity and Reed-Solomon), orthogonal dual parity check data and diagonal parity, have been used to implement RAID Level 6. So to the both of you DRS is considered RAID 6.

I have a laptop with 200 GB drive in it. I have 300 GB of music. I have about 200 GB of Photos. I have about 200 GB of movies. Now tell me how to get this backed up with Carbonite? I cannot as none of it will fit on my laptop and the only way to upgrade my laptop is with external drives.

I was a customer of Mozy. When my computer crashed I downloaded all the files that were stored on their server. All the files were altered and not sent to me in their original format. When I called their customer support I was continually given the runaround and promised that a DVD with the files in their original format would be sent to me. Nothing ever happened. I left a message with their home office and nobody ever got back with me from their either. They completely ignored all my phone calls and emails. I would definitely stay away from this company. Your information is not safe with them.

here's a service that costs less than mozy and is unlimited also. It's simple...offers sftp access. You can upload using any sftp client you choose. Also, you can access your files from a web browser over https.

Ya Mozy. Ugh. I start using it, since a collegue of mine was using it for his clients as well. Mozy is cheap off site back up, but thats really all to it. What is "cheap" if the stuff is not working? Often their software is freezing, sluggish, or simply times out. I have approx 250 GB to backup. the first 100 is backed up, but now it is stuck. I even reinstalled Mozy, didn't help. Too bad I recommended mozy to my clients a while ago.

Mozy is a peice of crap or one big lie, if you have a very large file compacity to back up. Mozy can't even fix their server ut3 which has been down for over 15 hours or more. The have a great sale pitch, but their ability to restore large file is terribly over rated. You almost always get a different answer on the same problem for the same problem. If I knew about this before i backed up 18 GB of info. I never would have signed up. DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK

Both Mozy and Carbonite services are designed for consumers. You should not install them on your servers. Mozy does have a Pro and enterprise version which costs you a lot more. All in all, I would recommend trying this product: http://www.vosi.biz/Downloa.... VOSI.biz offers higher end remote file server and remote backup services.

I use the Mac client and find it incredibly flaky. I'm constantly seeing stuff like what is below. I've left it on for days and never gotten past 5% of a 20Gb backup. I'm sure my internet connection is fine through all of this (using Web and VPN are no problem).

I'm guessing that Mozy has seen a huge uptick in demand recently and doesn't have the servers to handle it. They really need to get on this problem or Amazon or somebody will roll out a better service and steamroller them.

I have found after turning off the virtual drive & icon overlays and waiting for the initial upload that Mozy has been ok. I have backed up about 90GB AND successfully resored files. I also do a full acronis image once a week of my entire computer which is stored on a separate harddrive. I have never tried to restore more than 20GB ish at a time though. Please Steve let me know how to chnage the speed cap with mozy home. Thanks
